KFOR: We are deeply concerned about recent events in North Mitrovica, KP should conduct thorough investigation
We are deeply concerned about the recent events in North Mitrovica and expect the Kosovo Police to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident. Any form of violence is unacceptable, KFOR stated for Kosovo Online.
As further stated in the response to our portal, “KFOR is closely monitoring the situation and is well prepared to respond to any developments that could affect security in Kosovo and regional stability.”
“We urge all parties to refrain from provocative rhetoric and actions that could further escalate the situation and negatively impact security and stability in Kosovo. KFOR continues to carry out its UN mandate, based on Security Council Resolution 1244 from 1999, to contribute to a safe environment for all people and communities living in Kosovo, at all times and impartially, in close coordination with the Kosovo Police and the European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX), in their respective security roles,” a KFOR official told Kosovo Online.
According to videos posted on social media, the incident on Friday occurred in the pedestrian zone in North Mitrovica, near the main bridge over the Ibar River. The footage shows a member of the Kosovo Police lunging at a Serbian high school student, grabbing him several times around the neck area.
High school graduates were celebrating the end of the school year, and while passing through the promenade, the videos show that Albanians sitting in nearby cafes were shouting at them and making the two-headed eagle hand sign.
