Kryeziu: Hamza and Abdixhiku should resign
The executive director of the Kosovo Democratic Institute, Ismet Kryeziu, believes that the leaders of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), Bedri Hamza and Lumir Abdixhiku, should resign as party leaders after, as he stated, losing three elections.
"That would help foster internal democracy and political accountability within their parties. Why should someone remain at the head of a party for several years?" Kryeziu asked in a Facebook post.
He noted that the position of party leader, at least within Kosovo's political system, is not a job.
"You enter politics because of a goal, an idea, or many ideas that you believe are worth pursuing," Kryeziu wrote.
He added that elections can be won or lost, but that does not mean one's contribution ends there.
"After several lost election cycles, your greatest contribution would be to resign as party leader. Even after resigning, you can continue to be part of the party and contribute to it, because political value is not measured solely by the position you hold. After all, most people who contribute to politics and to a political party are not party leaders," Kryeziu pointed out.
He also said that resigning after a certain period or after several consecutive electoral defeats is an act of political responsibility and maturity.
"It is natural to make way for new figures who can bring fresh energy, ideas and new approaches. When a leader fails to maintain the trust of voters after several election cycles, it is normal to make room for others. That does not diminish their political contribution. On the contrary, it strengthens the party's democratic culture," Kryeziu said, adding that leadership rotation is part of internal democracy and one of its essential elements.
