Latifi: Only Albanians cannot hear the “alarm bells” of this era over the noise of party interests

Professor Blerim Latifi said today that developments at the global level showed that every nation must look after itself, but that it seemed only Albanians could not hear the “alarm bells” over what he described as the noise of party interests.

Latifi wrote on Facebook that two events in recent days had dominated global headlines—the speeches delivered by world leaders before the United Nations General Assembly and the Chinese leader’s visit to Washington.

He assessed that the addresses from the United Nations podium would be forgotten even before the delegations returned home, while the meeting between Trump and the Chinese leader would shape the future dynamics of global developments.

“The magnificent reception Trump gave the Chinese leader clearly indicates that America’s primary interests are now focused on relations with China. Europe is no longer an American priority; the course of history is shifting toward the Chinese horizon,” Latifi said.

He added that it remained uncertain whether Europe could overcome three challenges that would determine its fate—the war between Russia and Ukraine, the millions of migrants within its borders who resist the Western way of life, and the EU’s internal decision-making mechanisms, which lead to paralysis.

“This is a time when—as Ian Bremmer puts it—every nation must look after itself. The alarm bells of this era are ringing across the world—everywhere, that is, except in the ears of Albanians, because their hearing has been dulled by the noise of party interests,” Latifi said.
