Maliqi: Kurti will try to win a few more municipalities in the local elections if he can't secure central power
Political analyst Shkelzen Maliqi assesses that the complicated situation in the Kosovo parliament could be influenced by the fact that local elections are scheduled for October 12, possibly leading to the announcement of new parliamentary elections as well, which could be held at the same time to save costs.
“That seems to have been Kurti’s plan, because he knows that in the new general elections he won’t get what he wanted, 70 percent of the vote, so he will try to at least win a few more municipalities if he can’t gain central power,” Maliqi told Kosovo Online.
He emphasizes that the campaign has already, in a way, begun, and that the position of president is also coming into play, as the presidential election is scheduled for the spring of next year.
“If both general and local elections are held, and since forming local and central governments always takes time, the presidency could also come into play, leading to coalition-building. Although, considering how deep the political divides are, maybe it will all drag on for another two years,” Maliqi concludes.
