Mazreku: Kosovo’s friends want a stable and capable government
Professor of European Law from Pristina, Avni Mazreku, believes that Kosovo’s friendly and sponsoring countries want to see a stable government that understands the importance of Kosovo’s membership in the European Union and NATO, as well as the process of increasing the number of states that recognize Kosovo. According to him, the specific question of who will be elected as Prime Minister of Kosovo does not carry particular weight for them.
“Friends of Kosovo, bearing in mind that they come from democratic and highly developed countries, no longer impose specific conditions as was the case 15 years ago, when democracy in Kosovo was fragile. I think that Kosovo’s friends want a stable and capable government that can resolve Kosovo’s outstanding political issues,” Mazreku told Kosovo Online.
He recalled that the Constitutional Court set a deadline by which the Assembly must be constituted, stressing that political actors on Kosovo’s political scene must find a formula to answer the question of whether the winning party should form the government, or whether the opposition should do so.
“I believe that the entire political spectrum that makes up Kosovo’s political scene must, within the legal deadline, form Kosovo’s institutions—first the Assembly, then the Government, and afterwards other institutions. We are now talking about a constitutional deadline that political actors in Kosovo should not violate. If this is not respected, we will move from the current political crisis into a legal one. I do not believe that political actors in Kosovo are so immature as to break this deadline,” Mazreku emphasized.
