Dimitrije Milic from "New Third Way" believes that the US pressure on Pristina is not surprising, because Washington wants "the relations between Belgrade and Pristina to be at a higher level, because this is the guarantee of the stability of the region, that is, the Western Balkans".

According to Milic, the Western Balkans region had fewer inhabitants than Romania, so the US and the EU did not want "constant instability coming from a region that is quite small in terms of population and economy, especially not during the conflict in Ukraine".

"Therefore, it is not surprising that the US wants to push the solution a little faster, even in some way to show to the government in Pristina that if they are against the CSM, then they are also against American interests at this moment, regardless of the past of Kosovo and Washington," Milic says for Kosovo Online.

Our interlocutor points out that the obligation on the CSM from the Brussels Agreement is something that will definitely have to be implemented, especially now that the US is strongly behind it.

"Practically every issue in the Western Balkans was resolved only when the US joined, because in the last case, they have greater power of influence in the diplomatic sphere and react faster and more decisively, unlike the EU, where a large number of member states have to agree. In the EU, you also have five countries that do not recognize Kosovo. I think that the Government in Pristina will understand the message from Washington very well because they do not have many alternatives and if they lose an ally like the US, they do not have many tools left as a country that is still not recognized by the majority of the world," Milic says.
