The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia has expressed serious concern regarding the verbal announcement made yesterday by the Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs on the recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo. It stated that this decision represents a grave violation of the principles of international law, the UN Charter, and the valid UN Security Council Resolution 1244.

"The current political situation in the Sudan, characterized by uncertainty and the lack of legitimacy of the current government, calls into question the validity of such internationally relevant decisions. The capacity of the current Government of the Sudan to make decisions of vital importance for international relations is questionable, especially in the context of issues concerning the sovereignty and territorial integrity of United Nations member states," the statement reads.

It further adds that this decision is not only contrary to international legal norms but also undermines efforts for a peaceful resolution of relations in the Balkans.

"The Republic of Serbia recalls previous UN Security Council resolutions, as well as the existing mechanisms for resolving the status of Kosovo and Metohija, which prescribe dialogue, not unilateral actions," the Ministry said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia calls on the international community to respect the UN Charter and the principles of international law, to refrain from recognizing the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo, and to support dialogue as the only sustainable solution.

"At the same time, we call on the Government of Sudan to reconsider its decision, bearing in mind the complexity and sensitivity of the situation," the statement reads.

It also emphasizes that Serbia remains committed to preserving its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as to strengthening peace and stability in the region.
