Muhaxhiri: In economic crisis, promise of higher salaries brought more votes for PDK
According to preliminary results of the parliamentary elections, the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) secured several tens of thousands more votes compared to the elections four years ago. Political analyst Artan Muhaxhiri believes that the most important factor behind PDK’s increased support was their candidate for prime minister, Bedri Hamza, promising a 50% salary increase.
As he notes, during the ongoing economic crisis, people’s well-being and salaries play a crucial role in deciding whom to vote for.
"PDK has raised salaries twice in the past, and people now had a certain level of trust that they could do it again. So, I believe this was probably the most important factor behind PDK’s increase in votes," Muhaxhiri stated.
He emphasizes that Albin Kurti has not carried out any major economic projects and has very poor relations with the US and the EU. However, he also points out that the opposition failed to take full advantage of this and did not create a significantly better platform for citizens.
"They didn’t do that, and they ended up with this result, which I think is not satisfactory for them," he said.
Regarding the possibility of PDK joining forces with other opposition parties to form a government without the Self-Determination Movement, Muhaxhiri says that such an option exists as a theoretical possibility.
"If all opposition parties unite, they can form a government, including with the Serb List. I believe this could be a rational option given the major challenges Kosovo faces in the international community, particularly in dialogue and regarding the Community of Serb Municipalities. Such a government could complete all unfinished tasks, address the demands of the international community, and rebuild relations with the US and the EU. I think Kosovo will face serious trouble if Kurti continues with his current approach toward the US," Muhaxhiri concluded.
