Former leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), Isa Mustafa, said today that it would not be good for the Self-Determination Movement, which holds a parliamentary majority, the position of parliamentary speaker and the post of prime minister, to also take the position of president of Kosovo. He stressed that the party should show readiness to support a candidate proposed by the opposition or one around whom there is broad agreement.

“The solution would not be for Self-Determination, which has a majority in parliament, the speaker of parliament and the government, to also have the president. That would take us back to a one-party state,” Mustafa told Indeks Online.

He said that the concentration of power within a single political entity violates democratic balance.

Therefore, he added, the solution should come through cooperation between the ruling party and the opposition.

“The solution would be for the party that has the majority to show readiness to elect a president from the opposition or a person around whom both the ruling party and the opposition agree,” Mustafa said.

According to him, such an approach would help maintain institutional and political balance in Kosovo.

Speaking about the characteristics a potential candidate should have, Mustafa said it is difficult to find an ideal figure, but that it should be a person who ensures internal balance, protects the Constitution and represents Kosovo’s interests abroad.

“If there is no will, it would be better to end this cycle of stagnation and go to elections,” Mustafa said.

He also pointed out that geopolitical and geo-economic changes require everyone to define their own interests.

“It seems that we are not on that path,” Mustafa said.
