Office for Kosovo and Metohija: The treacherous murder of Dimitrije Popovic 22 years ago remains one of the most painful symbols of Serbian suffering
The Office for Kosovo and Metohija stated in a press release that today marks 22 years since what it describes as the treacherous murder of then seventeen-year-old Dimitrije Popovic from Gracanica, whose death has remained one of the most painful symbols of the suffering of the Serbian people in Kosovo during the post-war period.
“Dimitrije was an innocent victim of the hand and monstrous, irrational hatred of an Albanian, guilty only of being a Serb from Gracanica, a young man who hated no one, but who himself became a target of those whose minds had been clouded by intolerance,” the statement says.
It further notes that remembering Dimitrije is not only a remembrance of a life cut short too soon, but also a reminder of a period in which many became victims of violence and intolerance directed against the Serbian people.
“His youth, dreams, and future were cut short by a crime that left an indelible mark on the Serbian people and the entire community of Gracanica. On this day, we pay tribute to Dimitrije with deep respect, sharing the pain and sorrow of his family, friends, and all those who preserve his memory,” the Office stated.
The statement emphasizes that although the forms of pressure today are different, the position of the Serbian people in Kosovo continues to be marked by numerous challenges and hardships, and that the denial of basic human rights and attempts at the ethnic cleansing of the Serbian people demonstrate that the struggle for survival and a safe life is still ongoing.
“That is why today, more than ever, we need unity and solidarity, so that we may face all challenges together, because that is what Dimitrije’s sacrifice teaches us. Despite everything, the Serbs of Gracanica remain firmly devoted to their families, roots, homes, and holy sites. It is precisely this perseverance and determination to remain and endure that represents the best response to the policy of hatred that our people face,” the statement reads.
It adds that the Office for Kosovo and Metohija will continue to support the Serbian people in Gracanica and throughout Kosovo, preserving the memory of innocent victims and seeking justice for them, while providing support to all those who, despite numerous hardships, remain on their ancestral lands.
