Petkovic with Ziadeh: The irreplaceable role of the UN Mission in Kosovo in preserving peace
The Director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija, Petar Petkovic, met today with Caroline Ziadeh, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), to discuss the political and security situation in Kosovo and the upcoming UN Security Council session, scheduled for October 30, where the UN Secretary-General's report on UNMIK's work will be presented.
According to a statement from the Office for Kosovo and Metohija, Petkovic began the conversation by emphasizing the irreplaceable role of the UN Mission in Kosovo in maintaining peace, security, and protecting human rights, and he expressed expectations that international organizations and institutions on the ground would fulfill their mandates, ensuring conditions in which attacks on Serbs would not be possible, let alone tolerated.
"Pointing out the fact that the safety and security of the Serbian population on the ground are seriously threatened, Petkovic stated that the upcoming UN Secretary-General's report on UNMIK's work would be crucial for understanding the current situation in Kosovo and Metohija and the unbearable living conditions faced by the Serbian people there, while considering all the facts and circumstances that had led to this," the statement reads.
Petkovic informed Ziadeh about the latest developments in Kosovo, emphasizing that the unilateral, illegal, and escalating actions by Pristina are aimed at creating unbearable living conditions for the Serbian population, threatening their complete expulsion from Kosovo.
"This clearly shows Albin Kurti's intent to create an ethnically pure Kosovo and Metohija by violently shutting down Serbian institutions, using violence, terror, and daily pressure, and to have a complete Albanization of the area," Petkovic stated.
As he added, all the problems the Serbian population in Kosovo is facing unequivocally confirm the urgent need to establish the Community of Serb Municipalities, which would secure the collective and individual rights of the Serbian people, as outlined in the Brussels Agreement, and which the Pristina authorities have refused to implement for over eleven years.
Petkovic conveyed Belgrade's strong commitment to preserving peace and stability in Kosovo and the region, as well as its determination to uphold international rules and norms.
"This primarily means respecting UN Security Council Resolution 1244 and the existing documents that must be respected and implemented," Petkovic concluded.
