Prenkaj: Perparim Rama would stabilize the situation within the LDK
Diplomat Albert Prenkaj said that there is a contest for the leadership of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), adding that the current Mayor of Pristina, Perparim Rama, would stabilize both the party and the broader political landscape if he became its leader.
Prenkaj told Kosovo Online that Kosovo's political spectrum is predominantly right-wing and conservative, although center-left parties have occasionally emerged without lasting success.
At the same time, he added, there have also been theistic political organizations, which have maintained a small presence in the Kosovo Assembly.
According to him, the LDK, as Kosovo's first political party, is a center-right party, a member of the European People's Party (EPP), and the oldest transnational center-right political party, founded in 1976.
Prenkaj noted that after the death of Ibrahim Rugova, the party went through a series of leadership crises, a situation that continues today.
"It is well known that during the 1990s the LDK led a peaceful resistance against Slobodan Milošević's regime by organizing the well-known parallel system of institutions in Kosovo. After the 1999 war and the death of the LDK's historic president and leader, Ibrahim Rugova, the party entered a period of leadership crises. Today, the LDK is once again in need of new leadership. The results of the last three elections show that the party's performance has been insufficient.
With the transition of the Guxo party, formerly an ally of Self-Determination, and the return of former President Vjosa Osmani and several of her associates to the LDK, there was an impression that she would also bring back the large number of votes she had previously taken to Self-Determination. That return happened largely due to the insistence of LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku. That political investment did not produce the expected results, which means that the former President of Kosovo, a close associate of Albin Kurti, was not a leader capable of matching Kurti," Prenkaj said.
He added that it is evident there is competition within the LDK for new leadership, although Abdixhiku is resisting it, believing he still has the strength and support to lead the party.
"In essence, Abdixhiku has publicly declared that his preferred option is Vjosa Osmani as the candidate for President of Kosovo and a possible governing coalition agreement with Kurti. It appears that a significant portion of the LDK membership disagrees with that political direction, if it can even be called that. Within the LDK there is open opposition both to a possible coalition with Self-Determination and to Vjosa Osmani's candidacy for president. In the meantime, signatures have been collected challenging the position of the incumbent LDK leader, Lumir Abdixhiku," he added.
As a possible new party leader, he mentioned Pristina Mayor and LDK member Perparim Rama, who, according to Prenkaj, communicates more directly, an approach that has produced tangible results in the municipality he leads.
"There is talk of a potential new LDK president, a new leader who could challenge Albin Kurti's rule, a leader who could match Self-Determination's policies. One of the politicians being mentioned is Perparim Rama, the Mayor of Pristina, a homo novus who has brought a new spirit from London and who could take the party to a higher level. Compared with previous opposition leaders, Rama appears more direct in his communication, which has produced concrete results in the capital," Prenkaj said.
As he emphasized, Rama, or any other viable alternative, would stabilize the LDK and, consequently, Kosovo's institutional dynamics.
"I believe that the option of Perparim Rama, or another alternative, would stabilize the LDK and, with it, the broader political spectrum, as well as Kosovo's institutional and state dynamics," Prenkaj said.
