Radakovic: Elections do not suit Kurti at this moment

Executive Director of the non-governmental organization Center for Advocacy of Democratic Culture (ACDC) Dusan Radakovic assessed that all possibilities for resolving the political crisis in Kosovo have not yet been exhausted, but that at this moment Prime Minister Albin Kurti has no interest in holding new elections.

“Not all possibilities have been exhausted. I think that at this moment elections do not suit Kurti in any respect, because PDK is strengthening the nationalism that he lost through the KLA and the army. After the decision, it started to grow, because we have had protests for so many days now,” Radakovic said.

He believes that, if early elections are held, they could take place at the end of December.

“Kurti will certainly, both because of the decision made in The Hague and because he has already organized elections three or four times without anything concrete, a government without a government, without an assembly, and if he cannot organize them on December 27, as he wishes, he will certainly have fewer voters,” Radakovic said.

He expects Kurti now, perhaps even at the expense of his own government, to try to find room for parliamentary politics and dialogue with opposition parties.

“Now, I suppose, PDK will seek its own candidate, someone who may not be from that party, but an intellectual who will wholeheartedly support the abolition of the Specialist Chambers, so that the decision can somehow be set aside or minimized, so that these rulers can return to their place. But, on the other hand, we will see whether the court will stand firm. I sincerely hope so,” he said.

Radakovic said that one possible scenario would be to avoid new elections by finding a compromise candidate for president, assessing that the responsibility for such an agreement would primarily lie with Kurti.

“I hope there will be no elections, that a solution will be found. I think that at the moment the hot potato is in Kurti's hands. How can he resolve the situation without elections and have a candidate whom he does not entirely want, while the other side only grows stronger in this way if it has its own candidate for president,” Radakovic concluded.
