Ramadani: Some European countries will not abandon NATO membership to form a European army

Security expert Burim Ramadani told Kosovo Online that the idea of a European army is quite old and has become louder in recent times due to the war in Ukraine and diplomatic tensions between the United States and Europe, but that he does not believe the European Union or European countries are capable of reaching that point.

He notes that the idea of a European army originated in France more than 30 years ago, but believes that NATO represents a security umbrella for European countries.

“NATO will remain as it is, and I do not see Europeans being able to form an army—also because some countries in Europe, such as Poland and Hungary, maintain very close cooperation with the United States and therefore will not abandon NATO membership in order to form a European army,” Ramadani said.
