Romania is one of the five European Union member states that do not recognize Kosovo, and the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated for Kosovo Online that Romania’s position regarding the recognition of Kosovo remains unchanged.

The statement was issued in response to Kosovo Online’s request for comment on European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos’s remarks about “encouraging signs” concerning the five EU member states that have not recognized Kosovo.

As the Romanian MFA further stated, it is not in a position to comment on statements made by members of the European Commission or other EU officials.

“We can inform you that Romania’s position regarding the recognition of Kosovo has not changed,” the response from the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reads.

On April 20, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos stated that she was “following developments” concerning the five EU member states that have not recognized Kosovo and that “the development is encouraging,” without specifying in greater detail what she meant by that. Kos made the remarks during a session of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, responding to a question from the European Parliament’s rapporteur for Kosovo, Riho Terras, regarding what the European Commission was doing in relation to the five non-recognizing states and how it should act in that regard.

In connection with the same issue, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of Slovakia stated for Kosovo Online that the 2007 declaration of the Slovak parliament concerning Kosovo remains in force. The ministry explained that the declaration stipulates that the resolution of the future status of the Province of Kosovo must be based on respect for Serbia’s legitimate demands, as well as the Charter of the United Nations and other norms of international law.
