Vujinovic: Kurti benefits from delays, opposition is fighting for its survival

Security studies researcher Nikola Vujinovic assessed that Kosovo is in a post-legalistic period because politics is being conducted regardless of the rules. Nevertheless, he understands the opposition's moves because, as he says, it is fighting for its very survival.

Vujinovic said that all opposition parties have their own objectives amid the current crisis.

"LDK, namely Osmani and Abdixhiku, are expecting an agreement. For that reason, this delay suits them, because I think Kurti is delaying the constitution of the Assembly in order to reach an agreement that there will be no new elections, even though at the same time, in parallel and paradoxically, he is also banking on new elections. PDK is doing this in order to undermine the integrity of both LDK and Self-Determination, portraying it as someone who violates all the rules, undermines institutions and blocks them. And the Alliance, as we have seen, is throwing eggs. I expected them to do that because there are few of them, they have no real political strength, and they can gain political points that way," he told Kosovo Online.

He added that the political situation has been illegal and unconstitutional since last year.

"We know that the Constitutional Court ruled that waiting until March 6 or April 6 for the election of the president was constitutional, although many authorities on Kosovo's constitutional system said it was not. I saw a number of former Constitutional Court judges who believed that it was unconstitutional. The Constitutional Court's decision is unconstitutional. We are in a post-legalistic period in which politics is conducted regardless of the rules. Power is essentially the only thing that matters," Vujinovic said.

In his view, Albin Kurti benefits from the delays.

"If I am not mistaken, Mr. Sadiku said that the Assembly would not be constituted until September. That does not surprise me at all. We remember February last year, the Assembly was not constituted for ten months. True, at that time it was obstructed according to the rules, whereas now it has gone beyond even that. The Constitutional Court decision from March 2025 was overturned, or rather violated, on Friday evening. By Saturday morning, it had already been violated. Once you violate the rules, everything that happens afterward is a violation. To conclude, I am not surprised by the opposition's behavior. It is fighting for its very survival and believes that this will hurt Self-Determination's political base. Self-Determination benefits from the delays because it wants to wear down its potential coalition partner, which entered talks on forming a coalition in order to gain something. But they are not giving it to them," Vujinovic said.

He expects a hot summer in Kosovo, but says this could also come at the expense of the Serbian community.

"We can expect a hot summer, but I am afraid that the Serbian community will be one of the targets of that heat. However, before September or October, I would be surprised if the international community came in and resolved this problem. Nothing will come of this. This, if I may call it that, soap opera will continue in the Kosovo parliament," Vujinovic concluded.
