Zecevic: Spain will remain firm in its position that it does not recognize Kosovo

Slobodan Zecevic, a scientific adviser at the Institute for European Studies, said that Spain, which took over the presidency of the EU Council on July 1, saw Kosovo as a "threat" to its own interests, and in that context had a very correct attitude towards Belgrade, in the sense of not recognizing Kosovo's independence, and would remain at that, Euronews Serbia reports.

Zecevic stated that Spain saw the case of Kosovo as a dangerous precedent that absolutely did not suit them, especially considering Catalonia's aspirations for secession.

"Spain is very firm in its policy of non-recognizing Kosovo; even the previous government was even firmer and set special conditions when it comes to Kosovo's participation in some meetings. However, the global policy of the EU is in favor of Kosovo because the largest countries support the independence of Kosovo, which is our biggest problem. Spain does not block some strategic decisions of the EU. For example, they did not block the Ohrid document, and it is quite controversial when it comes to Kosovo, in the sense that it speaks in an indirect way that Kosovo is an independent state that participates in international relations. Their position is a bit ambiguous - they do not recognize the independence of Kosovo, but they do not block those strategic decisions of the EU regarding the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina," Zecevic said.

The Spanish Ambassador to Serbia, Raul Bartolome Molina, recently said that the country supported the efforts of the High EU Representative Josep Borrell and the emissary for dialogue Miroslav Lajcak to resolve the situation in the north of Kosovo, as well as that the position of the official Madrid regarding the non-recognition of Kosovo would remain unchanged.
