Kastrati: Part of the population in the north boycotted the census; 2.31% of the population in Kosovo are Orthodox

The Director of the Kosovo Agency for Statistics, Avni Kastrati, announced that according to the population census, there are 1,602,512 citizens in Kosovo.

Kastrati stated that the majority religion is Islam, with Orthodox Christians accounting for 2.31% of the population, Catholics 1.75%, 0.5% of respondents declared they have no religion, and 1.5% did not answer the question about religious affiliation.

"In the north, only part of the population was counted because some citizens boycotted the census," Kastrati noted.

Regarding wartime damages, Kastrati mentioned that the Agency's data estimates that the damage to households during the war amounts to more than five billion euros.

The census counted 550,000 citizens living in the diaspora, and the census process will continue until the end of the year.

The last census in Kosovo was conducted in 2011 when the population was 1,739,825, while today it is 1,602,515.

According to the results, compared to 2011, the average age of the population was 29.97 years, while now the average age is 34.84 years.

Kastrati also added that the illiteracy rate has decreased from 3.85% to 2.27%.
