Freund: The Artemis Accords open a new chapter in Serbia–U.S. cooperation

Michael Freund, a fellow at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, stated that the launch of the Strategic Dialogue between Serbia and the United States marks a significant development in bilateral relations, emphasizing that strategic dialogues are reserved for partners seeking to deepen their cooperation over the long term, RTS reports.

Freund noted that the initiative represents far more than a routine diplomatic meeting.

"Strategic dialogues are reserved for partners that seek to deepen cooperation over time. They provide a framework for expanding ties across a wide range of areas, including energy, science, technology, innovation, and others," Freund said.

He also stressed that the Strategic Dialogue sends a clear message that both countries are committed to strengthening their partnership and focusing on a shared future.

According to Freund, one of the most exciting aspects of this development is Serbia's decision to join NASA's Artemis Accords, which promote the peaceful and responsible exploration and use of outer space.

"There is also a remarkable historical connection. More than a century ago, Mihajlo Pupin, the distinguished Serbian-American scientist, became one of the founders of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), the organization that later evolved into NASA," Freund told RTS.

He added that, by joining the Artemis Accords, Serbia is, in many ways, reconnecting with the legacy that Pupin helped establish more than one hundred years ago.

"President Aleksandar Vučić deserves considerable credit for pursuing a foreign policy aimed at expanding Serbia's international partnerships and positioning the country at the forefront of emerging technologies. Foreign Minister Marko Djuric also deserves recognition for his energetic diplomatic efforts in launching this new phase of Serbia–U.S. relations," Freund said.

He further noted that both the Strategic Dialogue and Serbia's accession to the Artemis Accords demonstrate that relations between Belgrade and Washington are increasingly focused not on the past, but on the opportunities of the future.

"This is a highly positive development for Serbia, for the United States, and for everyone who believes that dialogue, cooperation, and strong international partnerships can contribute to building a more prosperous and peaceful future," Freund concluded.
