Paint removed from Kosovo and Metohija street sign in Gracanica; Zivic: A message that creates unnecessary divisions
The paint used to deface the street sign bearing the name Kosovo and Metohija Street in Gracanica has been removed, while Gracanica Mayor Novak Zivic stated that such an act is not merely damage to public property, but also a message that creates unnecessary divisions.
A video circulated on social media today showing unidentified individuals using black spray paint to cover the word “Metohija” on the street sign for Kosovo and Metohija Street in Gracanica.
The paint was removed shortly afterwards, as confirmed by a Kosovo Online reporting team.
The street sign is located next to the billboard that was installed two days ago, the installation of which had initially been prohibited by the Kosovo Police because it contained the word “zavet” (“covenant”).
Speaking to Kosovo Online, Gracanica Mayor Novak Zivic said it was particularly concerning that the incident had occurred on the eve of the Vidovdan commemorations.
“Crossing out the word ‘Metohija’ on the sign marking Kosovo and Metohija Street in Gracanica is not merely an act of damage to public property, but also a message that creates unnecessary divisions among citizens. It is particularly concerning that such an incident occurred on the eve of Vidovdan, a holiday that, for Serbs, symbolizes faith, sacrifice, and survival,” Zivic said.
He added that it was equally troubling that the competent authorities had been present and had acted when it came to preventing the installation of the Vidovdan billboard, but had not been present when the street sign was vandalized and public property damaged.
“We expect the same standards to apply to everyone and for every act that disrupts public order and incites interethnic tensions to be addressed with equal determination,” Zivic said.
