People come to Leposavic for its nature, stay for its history and return for its flavors

Leposavic boasts exceptional natural, cultural, historical and gastronomic potential, providing a strong foundation for tourism development. One of its attractions is a thermomineral spring known as Vucanska Banja. The spring has long been known for its healing properties, tourism expert Nikola Radosavljevic says.

Radosavljevic points out that it is precisely the combination of unspoiled nature, rich history and authentic local cuisine that could make Leposavic a recognizable tourist destination.

Vucanska Banja, he adds, has been known for its healing properties since ancient times.

“The first more extensive research and water testing was carried out about 20 years ago. The analyses were conducted by the Hydrological Institute in Belgrade and the Institute of Mining and Geology, which carried out soil testing and drilling. Water was found at a depth of about 50 meters. It is rich in calcium, magnesium and sulfates, making it suitable for treating skin conditions and rheumatic diseases. It can also be consumed in certain quantities and is recommended for people with gastrointestinal problems. It has a high pH value, above 10, and according to some analyses it reaches as high as 12. This places it among hyperthermal waters, and it is one of the few of its kind in Serbia and perhaps even in Europe,” Radosavljevic told Kosovo Online.

He said the spring currently has a flow rate of around two liters per second.

“That is not enough to build a proper spa complex. Significantly greater investment and adequate capacity would be required to implement such a project,” he explained.

He said the most frequent visitors are elderly people with rheumatic or skin conditions, but that during the summer the spa is also full of children who come to cool off in its two pools.

“The first pool was built about 15 years ago, while in 2003 the site was expanded and another pool was built. There were plans to build a proper spa complex, but these were postponed due to the political circumstances and the substantial financial investment required. The site itself does not allow for any significant expansion, so one idea was to pipe the spring water to a more suitable location toward the village of Vuca, where a spa complex could be built. For now, these are only plans, and it remains to be seen what the future will bring,” Radosavljevic said.

He added that smaller-scale improvements to the bathing area are currently feasible.

“The area around the pools needs to be improved, places for storing belongings need to be provided, changing rooms need to be installed, cleanliness needs to be maintained, and the surrounding area needs further landscaping. These are currently the most realistic options for improving the site,” Radosavljevic stressed.

Speaking about the tourism potential of the municipality of Leposavic, Radosavljevic emphasized its exceptional natural assets.

“There are two mountains within our municipality – Kopaonik and Rogozna – which offer excellent conditions for developing all forms of outdoor tourism. They are suitable for mountaineering, hiking, mountain biking, camping and other outdoor activities. I believe that developing this type of tourism will be one of the priorities in the future,” he said.

In addition to its natural beauty, Leposavic also has a rich cultural and historical heritage.

“There are four monasteries and two archaeological sites within the municipality, as well as a rich gastronomic offering. We are known for producing high-quality honey, plums and rakija, while in recent years an increasing number of people have taken up viticulture seriously, so we now have several wineries as well. We are well on our way to becoming a recognizable wine tourism destination,” Radosavljevic pointed out.

He stressed that tourism could become an important sector of the local economy, but that its development requires substantial investment.

“We need to develop a specific tourism product that will make Leposavic recognizable. Promotion at tourism fairs, as well as showcasing our potential at various events and gatherings, is also of great importance,” he said.

Finally, he invited all nature lovers to visit the municipality.

“Everyone is welcome in Leposavic. I would put it in the form of a tourism slogan – Leposavic is a place you come to for its nature, stay for its history and return to for its flavors,” Radosavljevic concluded.
