At the proposal of Serbia, the UN adopted the Resolution on the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development

At the initiative of Serbia, the General Assembly of the United Nations had adopted today the Resolution on the International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development, which would be implemented from 2024 to 2033, the Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovation announced.

This represents another exceptional success of the Government of Serbia at the international level, since the General Assembly adopted this document at the initiative of the Cabinet of the Prime Minister of Serbia and the Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovation, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Permanent Mission of Serbia to the UN.

Minister of Science, Technological Development, and Innovation, Jelena Begovic, pointed out that this was an extremely important moment for Serbia and for the international community.

Begoviv pointed out that with this initiative, Serbia had shown its commitment to the development of science, technology, and innovation for the purpose of sustainable development, and that she was proud of the teamwork and dedication of everyone who had contributed to the adoption of this document.

"The Resolution on the International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development is a confirmation of our determination that science plays a key role in solving global challenges and achieving sustainable development," the Minister said.

According to her, through cooperation with other members of the United Nations, the goal is to use all the potential that science provides, in order to achieve the goals of a sustainable future.

This is the first thematic Resolution whose adoption was initiated and coordinated by Serbia since gaining membership in this international organization in 2000.

The Resolution was the result of constructive negotiations of the Mission of Serbia with approximately 40 UN members. This success represented another step towards strengthening the position of our country Serbia on the international level and showed our ability to contribute to global initiatives, the statement added.

The International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development, from 2024 to 2033, will provide a platform for the collaboration of all relevant actors, including UN Member States, UN system organizations, academia, civil society, and the private sector, to promote science as key to achieving a sustainable future.

"We look with great pride at this Resolution as another step forward in achieving our sustainable development goals. We will continue to work together with the international community to ensure that science is the engine of positive changes and the creation of a better future for everyone," Begovic concluded.

Brnabic: An important day and a great diplomatic success

After the adoption of the Resolution, the Prime Minister of Serbia, Ana Brnabic, also reacted, saying on the X social network that this was a great day for the country, but also a great diplomatic success.

"An important day for our country. At the UN, today at the proposal of Serbia, the Resolution on the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development, which will be implemented from 2024 to 2033, was voted. This is also a great diplomatic success for Serbia and I am sure that it will further strengthen our technological development," Brnabic wrote.
