UNS and DNKiM: Sanctions for organizers of conferences in Kosovo for not providing translation into Serbian

The Journalists’ Association of Serbia (UNS) and its branch, the Journalists’ Association of Kosovo and Metohija (DNKiM) protested over the fact there was no interpreting in Serbian at the conference organized by the Kosovo Agency for Gender Equality today, on the occasion of International Women's Day.

According to the UNS statement, at today’s conference, where Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti also gave a speech, translation was provided in Albanian and English. For the umpteenth time, Serbian translation was not provided for journalists from media outlets that report in the Serbian language

As they add from the UNS, after the journalist from the Media Center in Caglavica asked for an explanation as to why there was no translation into Serbian, the legislative officer at the Agency for Gender Equality, Nasera Ajetija, replied that the translation was not provided because they hadn’t received any confirmation regarding the attendance of journalists from Serbian newsrooms.

According to UNS, the invitation sent by the Media Center in Caglavica, which this media received a few days ago from that Agency, did not state that the media were requires to confirm the presence of their journalists.

"Media Center journalist Sanja Djokic sent a complaint to the language commissioner of Kosovo, Slavisa Mladenovic," it was announced on the UNS official website.

As pointed out in the announcement, UNS and DNKiM demand respect for the law and fulfillment of the right to equal use of the Serbian language and script in Kosovo, and demand that those responsible for this failure bear sanctions.
