The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on Palestinian membership, unprecedented for Kosovo
Today, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution recommending that the Security Council "positively" reconsider the issue of Palestine's membership in the organization, without setting a precedent for Kosovo.
The Security Council is also recommended to change the modalities for Palestine's participation in meetings of the global organization.
The resolution was voted in favor by 143 UN member states, with nine against, and 25 abstaining.
With the adoption of this resolution, the General Assembly intends to enhance Palestine's rights within the global organization – but without the right to vote or submit candidacies to United Nations bodies such as the Security Council or the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The resolution, proposed by the United Arab Emirates, emphasizes that the decision on Palestine's membership should be made on an "exceptional basis," meaning without setting a precedent for future cases, like Kosovo and Taiwan.
This part of the text was included taking into account the observations of Russia and China.
