Tahiri: Economy on the brink of collapse, citizens forced to leave Kosovo
The President of the parliamentary group Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, Besnik Tahiri, has called for a budget revision in Kosovo and an increase in salaries in the public sector to mitigate the effects of high inflation, and on behalf of the party, Tahiri requested that Finance Minister Hekuran Murati be called for an interpellation, Ekonomia Online reports.
Tahiri warned that the economy is on the brink of collapse and that citizens are forced to leave Kosovo.
"Through interventions, by raising tax rates on the one hand and blocking capital investments on the other, the government has had a negative impact on economic development. Within just two years of governance, approximately 500 million euros of capital investments have been blocked, which, as a consequence of inflation and delayed capital investments, has damaged Kosovo's economy by 200 million euros," Tahiri said.
He stated that a serious socio-economic situation had been created due to high inflation, increased consumer prices, rising energy costs, and the decision to raise property taxes, which had caused many difficulties for the citizens of Kosovo.
"Increasing salaries in the public sector would be a solution that would at least slightly alleviate the situation, and it should happen immediately along with a budget revision. It would affect overall consumption and indirectly lead to increased salaries in the private sector. If this is not done immediately, Kosovo risks being left empty," Tahiri warned.
