Gecaj: Uncoordinated actions in northern Kosovo lead to regional instability

The international community does not view northern Kosovo as a matter of "law and internal stability," but rather as a political issue, meaning that any action not coordinated with international actors leads to insecurity and regional instability, security expert from Pristina, Hysen Gecaj, told Kosovo Online.

"We need to be realistic and look at the situation on the ground. You know that over the past three or four years, we have had some unrest in northern Kosovo, along with a somewhat increased police presence, especially in North Mitrovica. The international community did not agree with this because it sees that part of Kosovo as a political issue, not a matter of order and internal peace," Gecaj told Kosovo Online.

Because of this, he emphasizes that any action in northern Kosovo must be coordinated with international actors, or it will escalate and spill over into the region.

"Given that the situation is viewed from a political perspective, if the state undertakes something with the intention, as the prime minister says, of ‘calming the situation’ without coordination with the international community, it will immediately be seen as a potential trigger for unrest that could cause dissatisfaction, insecurity, and instability in the region. In such a case, if clashes occur between the Kosovo police and the Serbian population in the north, the political situation will only deteriorate further," Gecaj explains.
