The airline Air Serbia today launched direct flights between Belgrade and Toronto, re-establishing an air connection between Serbia and Canada after 34 years. Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric said at Belgrade Airport that the new route connects Serbia with one of the world’s largest economies.

“We are opening the doors of the world for Serbia, and I am very happy and proud that our national airline is restoring flights to Toronto after 34 years. In doing so, we are connecting Serbia not only with one of the largest economies on the planet, but also connecting two important branches of our people. Let us not forget that hundreds of thousands of Serbs or people from this region live in Canada, and they will now be closer to their homeland. Today, I am also one of the first passengers on this newly launched route,” Djuric said.

Speaking about his visit to Canada, he noted that it was the first official visit by a Serbian foreign minister to Canada in more than a decade and that it marked the opening of a new chapter in relations between the two countries.

“I am going in good faith, with the desire to refresh the image of Serbia, our aspirations, our values, and what we have achieved over the previous two decades as a country that has tripled the value and size of its economy, a country central to the stability of Southeast Europe, and a country whose people genuinely want better relations with one of the world’s most significant economies. Important meetings await me on Monday with Canada’s foreign minister, the speaker of the Canadian parliament, representatives of the business community, and our people,” Djuric said.

Canadian Ambassador to Serbia Michelle Cameron stressed that today was an important day for relations between the two countries.

“We are marking 85 years of diplomatic relations — a strong foundation built on mutual respect, cooperation, and increasingly shared engagement. The introduction of this direct flight between Belgrade and Toronto represents a concrete step toward the future in our relations. Direct connectivity is essential,” she said.

As she noted, experience shows that the introduction of direct air routes significantly boosts trade, investment, and people-to-people ties.

“This flight is more than just a connection between two cities. It is a platform that opens the door to business, institutional cooperation, and the sustainable growth of our bilateral relations. I would like to congratulate the distinguished businesspeople who, as part of the Serbian business delegation, are traveling on today’s inaugural flight to Toronto. Your participation in the series of business events planned for the coming days sends a strong and positive message,” Cameron emphasized.

Serbian Minister of Economy Adrijana Mesarović said at the send-off ceremony for the first flight at Belgrade Airport that Belgrade was becoming an increasingly important regional and international transport hub.

She added that Serbia was continuing to position itself strongly as a modern, connected, and economically ambitious country that builds its place in the world through work, results, and a clear vision for the future.

Flights between Belgrade and Toronto will operate twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
