Bernardini: The dispute between Kosovo and Serbia should be resolved based on the situation, and not according to ready-made models
Professor of modern history at the University of Verona, Giovanni Bernardini, said that the message that Kosovo could take from the experience of South Tyrol was aimed at solving the dispute with Serbia, and not at taking ready-made models from abroad, Klan Kosova reports.
According to Bernardini, it took tens of years to reach a peace agreement in South Tyrol and the duration of the dispute between Kosovo and Serbia should not be seen as something negative.
"The main decision they can make based on the South Tyrol model - when there are problems with ethnic cases, they should find a solution based on the country, and the situation, and not by taking ready-made models from abroad. In addition, they must come up with new, innovative ideas. Here, the internationalcommunity can play a good role so that the two parties involved in these objections find a peaceful agreement," Bernardini told Kosova Press.
He stated, among other things, that Kosovo and Serbia should not continue to increase tensions, but reduce them and find an agreement that would ultimately mean that the future was in the EU.
"The approach of the international community and EU actors involved in ethnic issues should be a positive approach that facilitates dialogue and understanding between them. Also, it should give them a perspective for their entry into the EU, because in a way it should be a price for those interested; not to continue with the increase of tensions, but to sit down, to find an understanding, an agreement, and in the end, their future will be in the EU," Bernardini added.
