Burjani: EC messages to Kosovo clear – greater economic engagement and commitment to an independent judiciary
Political analyst Blerim Burjani assessed that the European Commission’s messages to Kosovo were clear and pointed to the need to build a “functional state in all areas,” along with greater engagement on the economic front and a commitment to an independent judiciary.
Commenting on the messages delivered by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during her visit to Kosovo, Burjani told Kosovo Online that she had also clearly indicated that amendments to the
Law on the Specialist Chambers fell within Kosovo’s jurisdiction.
“The messages are clear—a functional state in all areas. Greater engagement is needed on the economic front, as well as a commitment to an independent judiciary. When it comes to amendments to the Law on the Specialist Court, that falls within Kosovo’s jurisdiction,” Burjani said.
Commenting on statements made by Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti during the joint press conference with von der Leyen, Burjani said that Kurti had been brief in his remarks, focusing primarily on European integration.
“Kurti was brief. He advocates for Kosovo to be granted candidate status for membership in the European Union. However, I believe the European Commission can say much more when it comes to Kurti, because these are matters that fall within the Commission’s own jurisdiction and competences,” Burjani concluded.
