Dacic: We have many friends, Serbia will succeed if it runs for a non-permanent member of the Security Council
Acting President of the Government of Serbia and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dacic tells Kosovo Online that it would definitely benefit Serbia if it were elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council because it would strengthen its international position.
As he points out, the decision on whether Serbia will run for this position will be made after the vote in the UN General Assembly on the resolution regarding Srebrenica. When asked about the chances of Serbia being elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, considering that a two-thirds majority in the UN General Assembly is required for this, Dacic says that Serbia definitely has better chances than its competitors.
"It is still early to talk about it, but in any case, we have a large number of friends in the UN, and I am confident that we will succeed if we run," Dacic says.
According to a long-term plan made several years ago, as he explains, it was envisaged that Serbia would run in the next decade, but the situation may change.
"The President has said that we will wait to see what will happen with the illegal resolution on Srebrenica. I say illegal because it was adopted without the decision of the state organs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, based on the position of ambassadors. A state cannot determine its views based on the nationality of an ambassador in a particular country, which means that Bosnia and Herzegovina did not make that decision. On the other hand, this goes against the UN Charter because a matter on the agenda of the Security Council cannot be discussed in the General Assembly, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, like Kosovo and Metohija, is an issue discussed twice a year at the Security Council. That is why I say it is illegal," Dacic says.
The possibility of Serbia's candidacy for a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council was announced by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, in case the UN General Assembly adopts a resolution on the genocide in Srebrenica, and as he assessed, if Serbia submitted a candidacy, it would convincingly win over two NATO countries from Eastern Europe that have already announced their candidacies.
