Davenport: Before replacing the boards in the north - consultation with the Languages Commissioner
The head of OEBS in Kosovo, Michael Davenport, said that the Mission supports the institution of the Commissioner for Languages in determining the observance of language compliance with the laws, I will point out that the steps to replace the signs, on which the names of the places are in the official languages, should follow the consultation.
"OEBS is supporting the Commissioner for Languages in the Prime Minister's Office in determining compliance with language compliance under current legislation. Steps to replace signs showing place names in official languages should follow consultation with his office," Davenport said on the "X" social network.
With the assistance of the Kosovo Police, workers hired by the Ministry of Infrastructure on Thursday removed signs in Cyrillic and installed new ones - in Albanian and Serbian, but in Latin.
However, on the boards with the bilingual names of Serbian places in the north of Kosovo, which were installed yesterday with the assistance of the Kosovo Police, during the night between Thursday and Friday, the names in Albanian were crossed out with black and red spray, while only the inscriptions in Serbian remained.
As our journalists found out on the ground, inscriptions in the Albanian language were crossed out on the boards, and only those written in Latin in the Serbian language remained.
