Gallieni: KFOR is present in the north because of the crisis, but it is not objective to expect greater duties of the Mission

Colonel Andrea Gallieni, the spokesperson for KFOR, stated that KFOR is currently present with increased forces in northern Kosovo due to the crisis, but that it is not objective to expect greater duties of the Mission, reminding that KFOR operates in accordance with United Nations Resolution 1244.

"As of May 29th, additional KFOR troops have been deployed in northern Kosovo after four mayors attempted to forcibly enter their offices a few days ago. KFOR was there to prevent further escalation of protests, and on May 29th, a large protest took place in one municipality (Zvecan). During the protest, soldiers were injured by stones, improvised explosives, and firearms. It was clear that people were trying to protest peacefully, but it was also clear that there were other individual criminal groups attempting to attack KFOR troops," Gallieni said at a press conference in Pristina.

He added that it is the duty of the police to identify and apprehend members of those groups, and emphasized that it is important for both sides to consider the risks and consequences. Gallieni reminded that KFOR respects its mandate and United Nations Resolution 1244.

"It is important for both sides to engage in dialogue and find a solution at this moment. It is fundamental that all refrain from using their narratives because, at this time, the dialogue between the two sides is the only way to consider it as the sole means of resolving the situation. It is also the duty of KFOR to ensure conditions for dialogue conducted through the EU. To move forward and find a solution to this problem. The situation in the north seems to be improving in terms of security, and KFOR has also started modifying its presence on the ground, respecting the ongoing protest situation. KFOR will strive to provide a secure environment," Gallieni said.

He added that KFOR will remain reinforced in the north of Kosovo as long as there is a possibility of further escalation.

Gallieni also provided the media with information about KFOR activities and reminded that after May 29th, KFOR troops were reinforced by personnel from Turkey.

When asked whether KFOR would assume control in the future in northern Kosovo, Gallieni responded that it is not realistic to expect greater responsibilities for KFOR.

"No, KFOR is present in the north due to the crisis, but it is not objective to expect greater duties. At this moment, KFOR is monitoring the situation," Gallieni said.
