Haliti: The U.S. More Interested in Building Relations with Serbia than with Kosovo
Xhavit Haliti of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, commenting on the visit of Kosovo officials to the United States, stated that Washington is more interested in developing relations with Serbia than with Kosovo, Teve 1 reports.
“If Kosovo’s institutional leaders—in this case the president, prime minister, and foreign minister—are received at the State Department, I consider that a success for them, a step Kosovo and the U.S. are taking toward normalizing relations and building mutual trust. As for attending the United Nations General Assembly, that is by invitation of the UN, not Washington. The U.S. interest is greater in building relations with Serbia than with Kosovo,” Haliti said.
Speaking about the political situation in Kosovo, the former MP argued that caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti is reluctant to form a government because of the agreements signed between Kosovo and Serbia.
“What is expected from Kurti is to form a government. My impression is that Kurti is afraid to do so, even if he has partners willing to enter into a coalition, because he knows that the delegation scheduled to come to Kosovo to launch negotiations and a strategic dialogue with the U.S. would demand the implementation of the agreements signed between Kosovo and Serbia. He is not ready, due to his hardline positions, to accept such an arrangement,” Haliti stressed.
