Maliqi: Ending UNMIK would mark the conclusion of Resolution 1244

Political analyst Shkelzen Maliqi believes that UNMIK’s presence in Kosovo is largely symbolic and emphasizes that the end of this mission would mark the conclusion of UN Security Council Resolution 1244.

Commenting on the recent statement by US Ambassador to the United Nations, Dorothy Shea, that the time has come to end the UNMIK mission, Maliqi says that such a decision would mean there is no longer a need for a “mediator.”

“That would also mean that an agreement with the EU must be reached, one that is essentially already finalized and just needs to begin implementation, and that a geostrategic solution must be found to bring the Kosovo conflict to a close through an agreement,” Maliqi assesses.
