MFA of Serbia: Statements from Montenegro do not contribute to regional stability
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia has expressed concern over recent statements coming from Montenegro regarding support for Kosovo's independence and active lobbying for Pristina's membership in international organizations, which is, as they stated, contrary to international law and the United Nations Charter, as well as to good neighborly relations.
In response to Montenegrin Foreign Minister Ervin Ibrahimovic’s statement that support for Kosovo’s membership in the Council of Europe is a priority for Montenegro, Serbia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that no priority should be directed against the vital interests of other countries.
“Serbia does not interfere in the foreign policy priorities of any other sovereign state, but we believe that no priority should be aimed against the vital interests of other countries and peoples. This is especially dangerous when it comes from neighboring countries. And such statements undoubtedly further worsen regional tensions and do not contribute to stability in this part of the Balkans,” the statement said.
The Ministry added that Serbia remains committed to preserving peace and stability and believes that dialogue is the only path to resolving outstanding issues.
“We call on all our neighbors, including Montenegro, to refrain from statements and actions that could escalate tensions and to work toward strengthening mutual trust and cooperation. Given the historical and cultural ties that Serbia shares with the region, we believe it is essential to foster positive relations instead of supporting anti-Serb actions, further divisions, and conflicts. We hope that all political actors in the region will responsibly focus on building a stable future for all citizens of the Balkans,” the statement concluded.
