Ibrahimovic: Supporting Kosovo’s Council of Europe membership is a priority for Montenegro
Deputy Prime Minister of Montenegro and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ervin Ibrahimovic stated that Podgorica’s official support for Pristina’s request to join the Council of Europe “will not endanger the ruling coalition,” because, as he emphasized, the country’s foreign policy goals are clearly defined, RTV reported.
“Montenegro is recognized by international partners as a country that fosters good neighborly relations. Therefore, we will support our friendly state, Kosovo, because it is a foreign policy priority for us to become the next EU member, and this support does not contradict that path,” said Ibrahimovic, who is also the leader of the Bosniak Party.
He also stated that Montenegro has Croatia’s support on its path toward the European Union.
“What is positive is that, after five years, we have resumed bilateral political consultations. Things have definitely moved forward. I don’t want to speak vaguely, but I believe that in 12 or 13 days, we will have answers to certain questions,” Ibrahimovic said.
As Foreign Minister, he will be part of the Montenegrin delegation attending the NATO summit in The Hague, where discussions will focus on increased defense spending.
“The main thing is that Montenegro is recognized as a reliable partner, and we, as a small country, will contribute to collective security,” Ibrahimovic stated.
He added that Montenegro is making significant progress in the area of European integration, and that the upcoming Intergovernmental Conference will be a strong confirmation of that.
Ibrahimovic also confirmed that Montenegro has withdrawn its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term but added that the country has submitted its candidacy for the 2040–2041 period, RTCG portal reported.
