Former U.S. Ambassador to Belgrade William Montgomery stated, in light of the current situation in Kosovo, that it cannot be successfully resolved without direct, continuous, and effective high-level international involvement, RTV reports. Montgomery also emphasized that the United States, NATO, and the EU have a direct responsibility to steer the "course."

When asked how he views the situation in Kosovo, he told Tanjug that a resolution is possible and recalled an American saying often used by salespeople about customers and products – "you break it, you own it."

"This also applies to international relations in general. The United States, together with its NATO and EU allies, used military force and brought about the Dayton and Kumanovo agreements. In both cases, these international forces shaped the agreements under which Bosnia and Kosovo still function. And in both cases, three decades later, both are stuck in internal conflicts," Montgomery said.

He stressed that the U.S. and its NATO and EU partners have a direct responsibility to play a dominant role in correcting the course to put it on a more positive track.

"No situation can be successfully resolved without direct, continuous, and effective high-level international involvement," Montgomery reiterated.

The former U.S. Ambassador to Belgrade also discussed the solution to the Kosovo crisis in the KOntext podcast.

In an interview for Kosovo Online, he previously assessed that the best solution for Kosovo would be one that separates ethnic groups, rather than insisting on the coexistence of Serbs and Albanians. He also stated that progress in resolving the issue could come from Donald Trump, who, unlike much of the U.S. administration, did not form his opinion of Serbia during the 1990s.
