Muhaxhiri: I'm not sure Kurti has a clear plan for what to do next; it would be highly unlikely for him to win more votes than in February
Political analyst Artan Muhaxhiri stated that the leader of the Self-Determination Movement, Albin Kurti, does not have a clear plan for resolving the institutional crisis, and that new elections would be the worst possible solution for him, as it would be highly unlikely for him to win more than the 42% of votes he received in the February elections.
"Honestly, I’m not even sure Kurti is fully aware of his own plan. It has become extremely complicated, and I don’t think there’s a simple answer to the current situation. He needs at least four to five votes, maybe six, but I think he is facing serious difficulties even getting the 61 votes needed for electing the speaker of parliament or forming a government," Muhaxhiri told Kosovo Online.
He explains that the core of the problem lies in the vast gap between the Self-Determination Movement and the other opposition parties represented in the Kosovo parliament: PDK, LDK, and AAK.
"The gap between them is wide, extremely wide, and I don’t think it will be possible to bridge it," Muhaxhiri stated.
He assesses that if Kurti wants to form a new government, the solution would have to involve “major compromises.”
"But it is a very, very complicated situation because there are two opposing worlds," the analyst added.
When asked whether snap elections might lead to more votes for Self-Determination, Muhaxhiri was skeptical.
He is convinced it would be “a miracle” if Kurti achieved a better result than in February.
"I think the 42% he received in the last election was the maximum Kurti could achieve in the current situation, taking into account the economic problems and Kosovo’s isolation, especially from the US and EU. So I don’t think there’s anything he can do that would result in a miracle to repeat that performance. Most likely, he would win significantly fewer votes, and the situation would then be completely different. That’s why I believe Kurti’s best chance right now is to make some compromises if he wants another mandate, because I don’t think there will be major differences between the February 9 results and any future elections," Muhaxhiri concluded.
