Peaceful protests by Serbs in the north of Kosovo have entered their 44th day, and in front of the municipal building in Zvecan, hundreds of people are still gathered today, most of whom are employed in this local self-government and who are asking to be allowed to return to their jobs which were usurped by the Kosovo police forces.

As reported by the Kosovo online reporter, the gathered are determined not to give up their demand to withdraw special police units from the north, to leave the illegitimately elected Albanian mayors, who won their mandate in the elections with a turnout of about 3.5 percent, and to release themselves. Serbs who were arrested by members of the police in previous weeks, often with unnecessary and excessive use of force.

Citizens who are still gathered today at a temperature of 40 degrees and are peacefully protesting, avoid speaking by name and surname, because, as they emphasize, "every photo and message in the media means new lists for arrest".

"Everyone here is aware of that, and that's why people hide when they see photojournalists and videographers. You can see for yourself that Kurti expands his list of arrests almost every week. The target is many prominent Serbs, politicians, doctors, teachers, anyone who gets in his way that the north of Kosovo be without Serbs," one of the gathered told us.

They hope that international mediators will finally stop the daily persecution that Serbs suffer from Albin Kurti.

"Everyone is talking about de-escalation. It is known who led to this, Kurti and his actions with the special forces. Despite all the calls to withdraw the special units from the municipalities, this has not happened yet. All that remains are words, threats and warnings. What sanctions by the EU and the USA, it's just a joke of international representatives. Nothing has changed here. It's getting worse every day," citizens say.
