Spahiu: It is uncertain whether there will be elections in December

Political analyst Nexhmedin Spahiu believes it is still uncertain whether new elections will be held in December, but says that in that case Self-Determination would probably receive fewer votes than in the previous elections.

“It is still uncertain because we cannot predict what is in Albin Kurti's mind. Second, it is not clear what the Democratic Party of Kosovo prefers. That party now needs elections following the decision of the Special Court in The Hague. When I say the Democratic Party of Kosovo, I mean the Constitutional Court, which is still under the control of the Democratic Party of Kosovo. Therefore, the Constitutional Court would decide what would suit the Democratic Party of Kosovo in this case,” Spahiu told Kosovo Online.

While some analysts believe that the verdict against the KLA leaders in The Hague could complicate Kurti's plans, Spahiu believes the opposite – that the leader of Self-Determination is in a more favorable position following the decision of the Specialist Chambers.

“Albin Kurti is now in a much more favorable position because of the trial before the Special Court, but the Democratic Party of Kosovo will be in trouble, and it is expected that many of its activists will find a way to join Kurti. So, this whole picture creates uncertainty about whether there will be new elections or not,” Spahiu points out.

Asked whether Kurti's victory would now be as certain as in the previous elections, he says that this is also difficult to determine.

“It is difficult to say that as well, but it is important to point out that there is a great deal of disappointment because nothing is being done, the issue of the north is gradually being forgotten, so that no longer ‘works’, while on the other hand, he has achieved nothing during this period in any area. He will probably have fewer voters than in the previous elections, but it is uncertain how this will be reflected in percentage terms. On the other hand, we have a weakening of the Democratic Party of Kosovo because of the convictions in The Hague, while the Democratic League of Kosovo is divided, and it is not known whether this division will result in a larger or smaller number of voters. All of this is still uncertain. So, there are too many uncertainties for me to make a proper political forecast for the next elections,” Spahiu concluded.
