The US State Department welcomed the participation of Serbian citizens in the parliamentary elections, saying it looked forward to continuing and further strengthening its partnership with the newly elected members of the Serbian National Assembly and the people of Serbia, RFE/RL reported.

A State Department spokesperson said the Department was aware of the preliminary results, including former President Aleksandar Vucic’s concession of defeat.

“We look forward to continuing and further advancing our partnership with the newly elected members of Serbia’s National Assembly and the people of Serbia, building on the momentum achieved over the past year, including through the launch of the Strategic Dialogue,” the State Department said.

According to preliminary results from the elections held on October 25, the Student List won 52.54 percent of the votes cast, while “United Serbia,” the coalition centered around the Serbian Progressive Party and Aleksandar Vucic, received 39.29 percent.

The United States and Serbia launched their Strategic Dialogue in mid-July with the aim of deepening bilateral cooperation.

As part of the Strategic Dialogue, the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding on energy infrastructure and regional energy security.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio opened the meeting between US and Serbian officials on July 17.
