Vllasi: The Kumanovo Agreement was capitulation for Serbia, liberation day for Albanians
Analyst and former Kosovo politician Azem Vllasi stated that the Military-Technical Agreement from Kumanovo was, "in essence and effect," a capitulation for Serbia, and for Albanians, a day of liberation and the end of "Serbian rule" in Kosovo.
"The Kumanovo Agreement, in its essence and effects, represents more of an act of capitulation by the Serbian army to the NATO alliance following a 78-day intervention. For Kosovo and Albanians, it is Liberation Day," Vllasi told Kosovo Online.
He stated that the end of the war in 1999 also marked the end of a regime for Serbia.
"For Serbia, it was the end of the cruel rule of Milosevic’s regime over Kosovo and Albanians, after the great ordeal and suffering we experienced under that regime. It was the end of Serbian rule over Kosovo and Albanians. For Kosovo Serbs, it marked the end of the illusions and lies that Milosevic had fed them, promising they would live better and more comfortably while Albanians suffered under the regime imposed since 1989," Vllasi said.
According to him, Slobodan Milosevic's regime "created a deep division between Albanians and Serbs," and its consequences are still felt even by the Serbs.
"Kosovo has been free from Serbia for 25 years, and has been a state for only 17. It is still in the process of full consolidation, but it is a state. The most important thing is that all citizens in it are safe, free, and equal before the law, without discrimination of any kind. Kosovo is on the path to becoming a true state by the standards of Western democracies. And in such a state, life will be better for all of us," Vllasi concluded.
