Zecevic: Vucic's proposal to hold a session of the UN Security Council is expedient

Slobodan Zecevic from the Institute for European Studies said today that the proposal of the President of Serbia to hold an extraordinary session of the United Nations Security Council on the subject of Kosovo was expedient, since the situation and position of the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija was difficult, because the goal of the Albanian provocations was to evict the Serbian population, reports RTV.

"Given such behavior of Pristina, it is not bad for all members of the United Nations Security Council to be aware of the real situation in Kosovo and Metohija, as well as to have a clear picture," Zecevic said.

He said that positions and viewpoints were divided in the Security Council, that Russia and China were mostly on the Serbian side, and Western countries were mostly on the Albanian side, so, according to Zecevic, there could be no decisive decisions at this moment.

"The President of Serbia wanted to inform the ambassadors of Russia and China about the situation in Kosovo and Metohija, which will be conveyed to Russian and Chinese diplomacy and who will react to it in the United Nations," Zecevic told for Tanjug on the occasion of today's meetings between President Vucic and Russian ambassadors Aleksandar Bocan Kharachenko and Chinese Ambassador Chen Bo.

When it comes to the meeting between President Vucic and the head of the EU delegation in Serbia, Emanuel Giaufret, Zecevic says that Serbia is on the path to joining the EU, but also wants to implement infrastructure projects with the EU.

"As far as the EU is concerned, the Kosovo problem remains where the EU is the main mediator," Zecevic points out.

Speaking about economic cooperation in the Balkans and the Open Balkans initiative, which is often put in parallel with the European process, Zecevic says that the Open Balkans had greater ambitions than the European process, which related to an even freer flow of goods, people and capital on the territory of the Balkans and that Serbia supported all regional initiatives for easier and more successful economic cooperation.

"Serbia has always been very constructive and wanted to contribute to economic development, because Serbia is on the rise economically and there is no reason to fear because it wants to have the best possible economic and political relations with everyone," Zecevic said.

According to him, these processes are limited and all countries strive for EU membership because it brings a number of benefits that contribute to economic development, and the best example of this is Spain, which developed the most when it joined the EU.

"Regarding Ukraine, there was a dilemma before the NATO summit, even NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg spoke about the fact that Ukraine would be offered a clear path to NATO membership, but that turned around, which was crucially contributed by US President Joe Biden and Chancellor of Germany Olaf Soltz," says Zecevic.

According to Zecevic, the reason for this is that NATO did not want to enter into a direct confrontation with Russia, and the second reason is to leave room for future negotiations with Russia.

Since the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky expressed dissatisfaction after the NATO summit, Zecevic says that he expected the opening of the NATO accession procedure, but that the USA replied that Ukraine was a country at war and that it had internal problems, primarily related to corruption.

"In order for a country to join NATO, it should have good relations with its neighbors and have stable institutions, but also not be at war," said Zecevic.

He also stated that Ukraine would be "under the Western umbrella" and that it would have maximum aid, that new billions and new military investments were already being prepared, primarily related to tanks, anti-aircraft defense, and the French have delivered a part of long-range missiles SCALP, which will allow the Ukrainians to attack the Russians from greater distances.

"Zelensky is not satisfied at the moment because he thinks that a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia is the best option for Ukraine to win in this conflict. As for military aid, Ukraine will have a similar status to Israel, under full economic, military, intelligence and any other assistance from the west," said Zecevic.

Commenting on Sweden's entry into NATO, Zecevic says that Erdogan's diplomacy is surprising, since Erdogan changed his mind before the NATO summit and accepted Sweden as a NATO member.

"Erdogan received a promise from the US that he would get military equipment, primarily the F16 planes he was looking for. That's his trade at the moment," says Zecevic.

Since with the entry of Sweden and Finland, NATO gains control over the northeastern part of the world, Zecevic says that it is clear that the Russian military intervention in Ukraine contributed to the development of events that Russia did not want, namely that two new countries were accepted into the Alliance.
