The position of U.S. Ambassador to Kosovo has been vacant since January, an unusual delay that raises questions about the priorities of U.S. foreign policy toward Kosovo. Analyst Petrit Zogaj believes that the U.S. has specific priorities when it comes to ambassadorial appointments, reports Albanian Post.

According to Zogaj, the appointment of the U.S. ambassador to Serbia comes as a result of a shift in U.S. foreign policy and its coordination with Serbia’s increasing lobbying efforts over the past ten years.

“This is almost the opposite of what Kosovo has done, especially in the last five years,” Zogaj emphasizes.

In his view, Kosovo has almost irreparably damaged its relationship with the United States during Joe Biden’s administration.

“The lack of trust, broken promises by the Kosovo government that the U.S. would not be surprised by its actions in the north, as well as neglect of the dialogue process, have led the Biden administration to nearly give up on communication with Pristina altogether,” he states.

Now, with the Trump administration, according to Zogaj, Kosovo will need a great deal of energy to regain the lost trust.

“President Trump will have neither the energy nor the patience to deal with Pristina’s whims on domestic or foreign issues. In that sense, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the U.S. doesn’t prioritize appointing its ambassador to Kosovo for a certain period of time,” he notes.
