The Protector of Citizens, Zoran Pasalic, expressed his concern about the position of the arrested Serbs in Kosovo, who, he said, were exposed to torture, and appealed that all acts of abuse be investigated and sanctioned without delay.

Pasalic assessed, on the occasion of the 26th International Day in Support for Victims of Torture, which was being celebrated today, that in order to prevent torture and other forms of abuse, it was very important to urgently conduct investigations into all allegations of possible abuse, to provide adequate support to victims of abuse and to ensure that the perpetrators were punished.

"The fight against torture is not only a fight for the victims of torture, but also a fight for the dignity of all of us, and the right to dignity in the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia, in the provision for the protection of human rights, comes before the right to life,” Pasalic reminded, as stated in the announcement.

The Protector of Citizens states that normative steps have been taken to prevent torture and other forms of abuse and to improve the treatment of persons deprived of their liberty, but that the suppression of inadequate treatment also entails taking the necessary steps to ensure their implementation.
