Does the opposition have a plan and the strength to overthrow Kurti's government?
The three opposition parties PDK, LDK, and AAK started almost on the same day solo actions in an attempt to shake the government of Albin Kurti, dissatisfied that the US and the EU took measures against Kosovo because of Kurti's policies. Analyst Nexhmedin Spahiu, however, tells Kosovo Online that apart from criticizing the authorities, the opposition does not provide any solutions and that the support for Self-Determination is growing thanks to the opposition, while Dusan Janjic believes that there will be elections and that the opposition can "lower" Kurti to the voters' support of 30 percent.
Due to the measures of the European Union and America against Kosovo, the Democratic Party of Kosovo requested early elections and decided to suspend all official communication with Prime Minister Albin Kurti and President Vjosa Osmani, except in emergency situations. The Democratic League of Kosovo has decided to boycott the work of the Parliament by not attending the meetings of the Presidency of the Assembly, while the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo is for launching an official initiative for a vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister of Kosovo in the Parliament.
Analyst Nexhmedin Spahiu tells Kosovo Online that the opposition in Kosovo is not succeeding in overthrowing the government of Albin Kurti, because apart from criticizing the current government, it does not provide any solution. Regarding the AAK initiative for the opposition to vote no confidence in the government, Spahiu says that it is only for "appearing in public".
"The opposition does not have a sufficient number of deputies in the Assembly to overthrow the current government, so it is the only way for them to appear in public, to show that they are there, present," Spahiu says.
He thinks that the opposition hopes that the United States of America will overthrow the current government and that in this way one of the opposition parties will come to power.
When asked if it currently suited the US to overthrow Kosovo Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, Spahiu said no.
"The US will put an end to the negotiations through Kurti and Vucic," he believes.
Speaking about how the parties in Kosovo are currently listed, Spahiu states that he does not know the exact number in percentages, but that the opposition is in a very bad position.
"Precisely because they have no idea how to solve, first of all, the problem of the north, but also other problems," he adds.
On the other hand, Spahiu states that the support for Self-Determination grows every day, but not thanks to the members of that party and the Kosovo government, but thanks to the opposition, which, he says, is nowhere to be found.
"If the elections were held now, Self-determination would win about 70 percent of the citizens' votes," Spahiu estimates.
As another reason why the opposition cannot overthrow Kurti, Spahiu cites corruption in the municipalities where the opposition parties won the last elections.
"Those from the opposition who won the local elections are now showing rampant corruption again in local institutions, and that terrifies the people. Instead of concentrating on the development plan and ideas, the opposition is looking for elections, and in the meantime, it shows that it is corrupt. This does not lead anywhere," Spahiu concludes.
The founder of the Forum for Ethnic Relations, Dusan Janjic, tells Kosovo Online that serious research on the positioning of Albanian parties in Kosovo shows that Kurti will lose in the first elections, and he expects that extraordinary parliamentary elections will be held by the end of the year, along with elections in the north.
"Now that percentage is increasing because he has become an undesirable figure for the West, America, and the European Union. Albanians do not tolerate that, and the opposition uses it. But the main reason for Kurti's downfall is the policy he led and the fact that he came into conflict with Brussels, which has now called into question the visa liberalization for Kosovo. And thirdly, unlike him who told the same story about the policy of reciprocity in the second term, the opposition has changed. The Democratic Party of Kosovo, of which Hashim Thaci was a member, is a new party - the Democratic League of Kosovo of Isa Mustafa is a new party, with new people. These are people who are mostly connected either to the diaspora or, in terms of values, to NATO and the EU. So, the structure has changed. They are all encouraged now," he says.
Janjic believes that Behgjet Pacolli and new people will enter the political struggle.
"Those people who were in Self-Determination and who left Kurti are also very important here. What we are witnessing now could practically be foreseen. The Albanian opposition in Kosovo let Kurti get 'stuck' and ruin himself," Janjic says.
He does not doubt that the parliamentary elections will be held.
"For now, the EU is insisting on elections in the north, but in my opinion, it will go together. I expect that by the end of August, the public appearances and actions of the opposition will intensify, practically to enter the pre-election campaign. Of course, for the participation of the Serbs in those elections, it is important "to normalize the situation in the north, to begin the withdrawal of members of the Kosovo Police. The local and parliamentary elections also depend on this," Janjic believes.
He adds that the Albanian opposition corps - LDK, PDK, AAK, with the Social Democrats and the support of Pacolli - has the strength to "lower" Kurti to 30 percent, that is, put him in a position where he cannot form a government.
