Abdixhiku: Less than 48 hours have passed, and it has already become clear that the law amendments have no legal effect
Democratic League of Kosovo President Lumir Abdixhiku said that less than 48 hours had passed since the adoption of amendments to the Law on the Specialist Chambers, yet it could already be heard that they did not produce the legal effect that had been promised and that the entire initiative and idea had merely been a deception that “played on the emotions of a long-suffering people.”
“Yes, they deceived you. And yes, we told you so. You would have understood it in time had you listened to what we were saying instead of attacking the LDK and portraying it as an opponent of the KLA. But when petty party disputes become more important than the national cause, when deceivers are given the opportunity to speak and those who impose their views point fingers at others, when no one dares to say ‘the emperor has no clothes,’ then it becomes easiest to attack reason itself, trapped between nonexistent traitors and those who merely falsely present themselves as patriots,” Abdixhiku wrote on Facebook.
He added that less than 48 hours had passed and “the curtain had already fallen.”
“The noise is dying down and becoming merely an echo; the truth remains firm, while the people remain deceived. That was the position of the LDK, the largest Albanian movement for freedom, independence and democracy, on October 5 in the Assembly. At the time, they did not want to listen,” Abdixhiku added.
He recalled the LDK’s official position that, for the party, “the KLA’s struggle is sacred” and that, precisely for that reason, every institutional action must serve justice, the protection of the rights of the accused and Kosovo’s interests.
The LDK said at the time that it could not promise that a vote in the Assembly could overturn a judgment or replace the legal battle.
“The Specialist Chambers are founded on the constitutional framework and the international obligations of the Republic of Kosovo. Amending an ordinary law does not annul those obligations, nor can it circumvent the Constitution. Therefore, the mere adoption of amendments by the Assembly guarantees neither their implementation nor the outcome being promised to citizens,” the LDK said in its official statement of October 5.
At the time, the party also warned that the initiative to amend the law might not produce the desired legal effect, while its political and international consequences could ultimately be borne by Kosovo.
“For these reasons, the LDK cannot be part of this initiative. The LDK issued a timely warning about the potential legal, political and international risks it entails. We call on the sponsors of the proposal and MPs to take those risks seriously and to act in the interests of justice and the Republic of Kosovo,” the LDK’s official position added.
