Barac: It would be better for Serbia if Kallas were not at the helm of European diplomacy
Srdjan Barac, an associate at the Center for Social Stability, assesses that the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue and the issue of Kosovo are visible from the Baltics, but that it would be much better for Serbia if Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas were not chosen as the head of European diplomacy.
"Can it be seen from the Baltics? It can be, but not in the way we would like it to be seen. I think it would have been better if someone else had come to that position. They have recognized Kosovo and are in a region that, from their perspective, feels very threatened. For this reason, they are very obedient to their Western partners or those who dictate the pace or direction, and I think this may even be worse for Serbia's interests. But often, when we hope for such things, we might end up better off. I might even contradict myself; perhaps it will not be stricter compared to those who understand our position," Barac told Kosovo Online.
According to him, despite the fact that all EU officials have to implement common policies, they are still individuals who, either themselves or their countries, have their own foreign policy stances.
He adds that Estonia recognized Kosovo and accepted the narrative that only Albanians suffered there, which is why they will have much more understanding for them.
"But the key thing at the end of the day is the course set by Brussels and what is decided by consensus as the official policy of the European Union toward Kosovo. For now, it is still not a good enough course for Serbia, although there have been slight changes, micro-changes, where they have put some pressure on Albin Kurti, but very little. This was seen more across the Atlantic, and I think the pressure was more significant from there," Barac concluded.
