Bisevac: Serbs in the north are without human rights, the West is responsible

Nemanja Bisevac, advisor to the rector at the University of Pristina’s temporary seat in Kosovska Mitrovica, emphasized that human rights do not apply to Serbs in northern Kosovo and that the West is responsible for the poor conditions faced by the Serbs there.

Regarding the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's report on Kosovo, which states that some progress has been made but that tensions remain high in the north with a risk of escalation, Bisevac said that this progress is not visible in practice.

According to him, when human rights are discussed in Kosovo, it does not include the Serbs in northern Kosovo.

“I disagree with Mr. Guterres’s words; in practice, there is no progress. The Serbian people in northern Kosovo and Metohija face increasing pressures daily. Not only have human rights not improved, but the Serbian people in the north are completely without these rights," Bisevac said.

Bisevac observes that pressure on Serbs in the north has become an everyday occurrence and adds that Kosovo's Prime Minister Albin Kurti and his party have yet to fully enter election rhetoric.

“I believe we haven’t even reached the height of election rhetoric yet, and Kurti and his party will only begin to intensify their campaign, while their pressure on the Serbian people and Serbian institutions has already become an everyday reality,” Bisevac added.

As he stated, the West is responsible for the poor position of Serbs in Kosovo, as it has allowed the authorities in Pristina to act "arrogantly" toward the Serbs.

"I believe that the West should bear full collective guilt and responsibility for the situation of the Serbian people. They have allowed the authorities in Pristina to act ‘arrogantly’ toward the Serbs, who, within a few months, have been deprived of functioning Serbian banks and postal services, and have been left without social assistance. EULEX, as their representative on the ground, is certainly the most responsible. All of Kurti’s and Sveca’s ideas are enforced by their police, so they are all equally responsible for the poor state in which the Serbian people find themselves," Bisevac concluded.
