Brnabic: The continuation of the engagement of the UNMIK Mission is of key importance for Serbia

The Prime Minister of Serbia, Ana Brnabic, spoke today with UN Under-Secretary for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the UNMIK Mission, Caroline Ziadeh, about Serbia's participation in peacekeeping operations in the world, as well as the continuation of UNMIK's involvement in Kosovo and Metohija.

At a government meeting, Brnabic said that Serbia continuously contributed to world peace, security, and respect for international law by participating in UN and EU multinational operations.

The Prime Minister pointed out that for Serbia, the United Nations was the most important international organization and that we relied on its influence in terms of preserving the original values of the UN Charter, especially the section on respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty and Resolution 1244 of the Security Council.

For Serbia, the continuation of the engagement of the UNMIK Mission in an undiminished scope and with an unchanged mandate was of key importance, Brnabic stressed.

The Prime Minister said that timely, adequate, and visible reactions of the UN to numerous incidents, provocations, and unilateral acts of Pristina were important, and in support of this, she cited a number of examples of incidents that increased tensions.

Speaking about the continuation of the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, she said that it was necessary for Pristina to fulfill all its obligations from the Brussels Agreement.

Lacroix spoke highly of Serbia's contribution to world peace and security by participating in multinational operations under the mandate of the UN, which, as he assessed, often entailed the existence of imminent danger.

Ziadeh agrees that there are numerous challenges before the UNMIK Mission, as well as that she supports the continuation of the talks in Brussels in order to achieve constructive progress.
